JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — A former South Sudan finance minister is the latest former government official arrested in a wave of detentions that analysts say shows cracks in the government of President Salva Kiir, who also faces an armed rebellion. The latest arrest came Friday when Bak Barnaba Chol was taken into custody while attempting to cross the border into Uganda. His arrest followed that of another former minister of finance and planning, Marial Dongrin Ater, who was fired in August. In the past week, a former central bank governor, a former undersecretary for the ministry of petroleum, and a general in the domestic intelligence agency previously posted to the same ministry have been detained. Ramadan was sighted on Tuesday evening and that fasting has began today.  Religious authorities in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Palestine, Sudan, Somalia and Djibouti also said today would be the first day of Ramadan. Iraq’s Sunni Endowment Diwan also announced that Ramadan would begin on Wednesday. Iraqi Shia Muslims also started their fasting on Wednesday. Ifunanya Nwangene, a budding singer who captivated audiences with her perfo rmance of Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” on “The Voice Nigeria,” has died from a snake bite. She was 26. The incident occurred at her home in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, on Saturday when she was bitten on the wrist by a cobra while sleeping, according to Sam Ezugwu, the leader of the Amemuso Choir, of which she was a member. Footage circulating on social media shows a snake handler removing a medium-sized snake from her apartment. Two snakes were extracted in total, Ezugwu said. “She died in my hands,” said her closest friend, Paschal Nworgu. Nworgu told CNN he was by her bedside at the hospital she visited after a nearby clinic, where she’d initially sought treatment, informed her that they had no antivenom.
